Cuba Application for October 2015 DiMaggio Kalish

We’ve had a two decade love affair with Cuba and we’ve seen the side of Cuba most people don’t see. To visit Cuba is an amazing visual experience as well as a spiritual one. You will come away a much finer photographer and a better person. Please join us for an experience of a lifetime.  You won’t be disappointed!

*Just for the record, even though Cuban/American relations have improved and certain sanctions have been lifted you still cannot go to Cuba directly from the United States. You need to go as a group on-a-people to people exchange (such as ours), go with a religious organization, are a journalist or are in the Medical profession.  You need to have scheduled activities with very little free time for recreational travel/activities. The only thing that has changed is that you are now are allowed to bring back $100 worth of alcohol or tobacco from Cuba.

A little about our trip – the group will travel to Havana, Jaimanitas, neighborhood of the Artist Fuster decorated with his tile work, Cojimar, seaside setting for The Old Man & the Sea, Santa Clara, Cayo Santa Maria, La Estrella, Remedios, and Caibarien.  We will stroll the streets of Havana, visit The Higher Institute of Arts with Alberto Faya, long time musician and expert on Cuba’s Culture and cultural history. We will meet with the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, visit the Callejon de Hamel, meet and photograph the Psico Ballet, walk along the famous Malécon seawall – a block away from the hotel, visit the Arte y Corete project, the Callejon de Hamel, visit Foteca, The Cuban Center for Photography, the Rafael Trejo Boxing Gym, visit The Hemmingway Museum, and go to a jazz club.  We will visit the Che Memorial and Museum, Artisan Workshops, explore towns, meeting Cuban people in small villages as well as cities, coffee plantations and settlements. We will be stopping along the way wherever there are people with whom to interact and where great photos may be made. Special photography instruction and guidance will be given by your group leaders, Joe and JoAnne both Internationally known photographers. Airfare, top drawer accommodations, breakfast daily, several lunches and dinners, visa, transportation and English speaking guide.  Please click on additional links above for specific details which can be downloaded.

Joe’s Birthday Workshop Discovering Dumbo & Gleasons

Joe had a fun workshop in Dumbo on March 25th his birthday.  We had quite a turn out.  Everybody enjoys going to Gleason’s as it’s a one of a kind, kind of  place.  We had 4 students who were from other countries as well.   Yes there’s Ann Raine in the front holding the reflector & Larry Malang on the right.  Peter Poremba the President of Dynalite was also there to set up several lighting stations and answered lots of technical questions on his products. It was a great group!

2010 Fall Workshop

We had a great Fall Workshop this past Sunday in the Upper Delaware. I surprised everybody by bringing in two very pretty students, we used as models. The young ladies, Delanie and Jacqueline were great. We started the workshop at the Farm and the Llamas were curious, gentle, and followed us around as we photographed them.  We then went back to the barn as it was feeding time and worked with the animals a little more. In the back of the barn we found a window with some good side light. We utilized this window for our portraits using a little fill.  We worked on body placement, how to get a Rembrandt patch and simple direction. I took them to another favorite spot of mine where the lighting is so soft and beautiful for additional portraiture work.  We then went on to Luna Parc and worked on graphics. Students had an opportunity to meet artist Ricky Boscarino of Luna Parc along with another artist Greg Hicho as they collaborated on a new mosaic piece. We ended our workshop at one of the many local waterfalls learning how to work with the fluidity of water, nature’s colorful fall palette, in beautiful autumn light.
