Women’s Tribe

As an artist you sometimes search for a theme that you want to delve into because it speaks to you. A good theme is one you can build on and one which can grow.  Months can go by when I find myself not producing meaningful work and then one day something pops into my head and there it is.

I want to say thank you to some special friends that helped me out  – Eileen, Mary, Julia, Wendy & Chloe and behind the scenes – my partner Joe DiMaggio and Jerry

Milford’s Music Festival

© JoAnne Kalish

In September 2007, Arthur Frommer‘s, Budget Travel named Milford, second on its list of “Ten Coolest Small Towns” in Pennsylvania. Most people don’t know that Milford, PA is a place to come and hear great music.  It’s got a rich history of outstanding musicians living, others coming to visit, and playing all over this small town.  Not long ago, I did a story for The Milford Journal  (see a couple blogs back) on one amazing musician Bobby Kyle, who grew up in Milford. He explained the rich history to me in great detail on what it was like and what it continues to be.

Other than being known for music, Milford is also getting a fine reputation for a very special Readers and Writer’s Festival held once a year in the fall, as well as a Dance Festival and there’s so much more in the works…

This past weekend I had the opportunity to catch a couple acts of free music outdoors for the 17th Annual Music Festival. Unfortunately I missed a whole lot of other musicians, I heard, were really good!  I did catch Bobby Kyle and the Administers – as I always try to do, who played outside at Ambiance Furniture on Saturday as well as Scot Weis’s Band at the Column’s Museum during the weekly Sunday, Farmer’s Market. Both Bands played a full 2 hours of fabulous music!

Of course, for me, it’s also about the photography!  I was also hoping to post a couple tiny video clips I did on-the-fly, just for a small taste of what it sounded like, however, I need to post them elsewhere as I am not able to on this blog.

Blues Musician Bobby Kyle / The Milford Journal

Photo © JoAnne Kalish and article

I’d like to share an article I did in the April 2018 issue of the Milford Journal on Blues Musician Bobby Kyle. I’ve always considered Bobby to be multi-talented and I’ve known him for a long time.  Bobby has a new album out called “It’s My Life” and if I can make a suggestion….I think you should pick up a copy and find the time to go see him & his band live.  He’s a phenomenal artist and you’ll be glad you did!

I wrote and illustrated the article and because my partner Joe DiMaggio, has been working with Bobby for many years, he also contributed photographically as he has some incredible photos of Bobby.  Joe also has a chapter on Bobby Kyle in his book “FILL THE FRAME” and if you’d like… a signed copy can be purchased directly from us or you can purchase one through Amazon.

I’m including a pdf of the article in case you don’t have access to a copy of the Magazine (click here -)  kyle  Below is the cover of Bobby’s latest CD and a link to his website   http://www.bobbykyle.com/index.html

Peaceful Protest

Candlelight Vigil -6233

Candlelight Vigil, Milford, PA to honor students that died in school shooting in Parkland Florida © JoAnne Kalish

I do not believe in violence.  There’ve been too many tragedies caused by people who are mentally unstable using Guns.  Something must be done to change this!  It’s time for each of us to take a stand, so there are no more senseless deaths.

This was a Peaceful Protest last night, a Candlelight Vigil held for the young people who were killed in the Parkland, Florida School Shooting.  Young people will be marching in Washington this month and I believe they can truly make a change.  They are our future.  Candlelight Vigil -6297

Second Annual Milford Readers and Writers Festival

Author Patricia Bosworth © JoAnne Kalish

I spent this past weekend at the Second Annual Milford Readers and Writers Festival.  For such a small town Milford, PA has become quite an up and coming place to visit and to live in. There are so many things happening here. This being just one of them. It was a top notch affair. At last year’s event we had well known authors Gloria Steinem, MK Asante, and John Berendt to name just a few.  We had many other important writers as well.  A quote from Gloria Steinem, “This festival shows us the worldwide importance of coming together to share ideas and build community.”

This year started out with a bang with the play “Love Letters” on Friday night with Len Cariou and Heather Summerhayes Cariou, which I missed and heard was fabulous!  Our featured writers this year were Lee Child, Patricia Bosworth, Robin Morgan, Martha Frankel, Farai Chideya and Stephen Rubin as well as others.  I am including a link to the website http://www.milfordreadersandwriters.com/
